It was the first time I had been there to see them in bloom, and I couldn’t believe how beautiful they looked. Since then, it is something I’ve been thinking about going back to capture again. Just today, ahead of writing this post, I did a quick search to see if there was a forecast for the peak bloom yet. While there are a lot of factors to consider, the early consensus was that it will occur in late March or early April, though it may change. In 2023, I was there on a cloudy day, so hopefully if it all works out for me to get there this year, I’ll get some nice sunshine and a little color in the photos, too. Looking back, I can say I’m still blown away by the number of unique birds I was able to capture as part of that year-long project. So, to commemorate the project, I decided this blog post would focus on my favorite birding spots in Southern Delaware. Thanks in large part to its expansive area, Prime Hook offers an array of different habitats, which in turn means you have opportunities to view many different varieties of birds. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/dd6765fb-df8c-4ba5-b92f-ed4770f0742b/IMG_1210-Edit.jpg The Adventure Blog - My Favorite Birding Spots in Southern Delaware - When I go to Cape Henlopen State Park, most of my time is spent on the beaches or the marshlands along the Gordon’s Pond Trail. There are some trails through the woods, like the Pinelands Nature Trail or the Salt Marsh Spur, but I tend to stick with the areas I know best in Cape Henlopen - Gordon’s Pond, and The Point (Cape Henlopen itself). These trails and hikes are some of my more frequent walks when I go out to shoot - their proximity to where I live makes them easy to access - but on top of that, I also know I’m almost always guaranteed to see some sort of bird activity. A few of my favorite birds to photograph in Cape Henlopen State Park include bald eagles, great blue herons, wild turkeys, and some different species of plover (though I will admit, the beach-nesting piping plover has thus far eluded my lens despite repeated efforts…) https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/5bc36c85-de07-462d-bfdc-fa486db3ef63/IMG_4260-Enhanced-NR.jpg The Adventure Blog - My Favorite Birding Spots in Southern Delaware - As we continue through Southern Delaware, the next stop we’ll make is the Burton’s Island Trail in Delaware Seashore State Park, accessed via a small gangway near the Indian River Marina. In fact, if you’ve ever boated in the Indian River Bay, you’ve probably seen Burton’s Island from the water. This trail is about one mile long, and features pine forests, marshlands, and aquatic habitats. From the island, you can look out onto Indian River Bay and spot birds like loons, cormorants, and gulls, while the other habitats are ideal for different woodpeckers, herons, and more. It has been a little while since I’ve been to Burton’s Island, but the last time I was there I captured one of Delaware’s most beautiful native species - the cedar waxwing - which was certainly a treat! If you go to walk it, I believe it is somewhere between one and one-and-a-half miles long to go from the bayside access around to the oceanside access (which can be seen here in the image to the left). https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/2bd506a1-79e1-44de-bec0-40aa0ffd3c19/IMG_6624+-+Copy.jpg The Adventure Blog - Exploring Cape Henlopen (Again) - In general, it was a pretty slow day for wildlife sightings that day, though. There were a few surf scoters off the oceanside, but then nothing until I got over to the bayside and spotted some sanderlings and gulls. The surf scoters proved to be a great find, though, as I was treated to one of them raising up out of the water and stretching its wings - fortunately for me, I was quick enough to get my camera up and snap a few images of this before it proceeded to fly off. The sanderlings proved to be less cooperative, though, and I was unable to get any good photos of them, while the gulls just weren’t in any good positions. My final wildlife sighting happened unintentionally - there was a pair of bald eagles perched atop the concrete storage building by the East End Lighthouse that I only noticed after I took a photo of the lighthouse. I tried to zoom in and get a good shot of the birds, but even at 600mm it proved to be just a little too far off to get anything worthwhile. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/7dbd743c-4cec-4a4d-b80c-52c5ef74a75a/IMG_6644.jpg The Adventure Blog - Exploring Cape Henlopen (Again) - On this particular walk, I was fortunate with the timing as the Cape May - Lewes Ferry was on its first crossing of the day, coming over from New Jersey. I have to admit, though I always have a fun time on that hike, I also felt slightly defeated - I was REALLY hoping to spot a seal, even if it was in the water, and/or my first snowy owl. Though that didn’t happen, I can already tell you I’ll be back out there before long! If you haven’t ever been out there to explore, I highly recommend you do so while it is open! Cape Henlopen will be open through the end of February, closing on March 1 for the beach nesting season. From then, the oceanside stays closed until September 1 and the bayside until October 1. Remember though - dress warm since it is open during the coldest stretch of the year! I really love the lighting in this photo, and that the fox took a moment to look over at me after I brushed against a tree branch. It shows the environment the fox is in, rather that going for a tighter, portrait-like crop that focuses on just the animal. I feel as the year went on, my work continued to evolve and improve. This one, a long exposure taken using an ND filter, showed that evolution and growth very well. Just a week or so ago, I found myself out on the Gordon’s Pond Trail for the first time in a few months. It was a pretty foggy start to the day, and I chose to walk the trail from the Lewes side toward Rehoboth. A little while into the walk, I found myself coming up toward the bend in the image below, and was captivated by the sunlight catching the fog. The golden light was further enhanced by the framing of the pines on either side. This one just barely missed the cut as the image I would say was the best one I’ve taken this year. Just before getting to Surf Avenue, I noticed a trio of bucks grazing along the road in the pine trees. Naturally, I pulled over and hopped out to take a few photos of them. After I took one or two images of them all together, this particular buck took a step or two away from the others and looked up at me. He couldn’t have chosen a better spot, as when he looked up he was framed perfectly by some low-hanging branches. His coat made for a nice color contrast to the greens of the pine needles and background grasses, too. Eric Carter It wasn’t until about a year or so ago that I started to follow Eric, though his work would be recommended to me from time to time in a feed before that. To be honest, I’m not really sure what took me so long to hit the follow button on his page - his long exposure work is second to none here in Delaware! Eric’s photos have a really moody yet warm feel to them, thanks to the motion he captures in each scene with a slower shutter speed - a slower shutter speed exposes the camera to more light, while also allowing it to capture and blur motion. This helps bring the scenes alive despite being a still image (something I’ve touched on in some of my posts), as it shows how the water or clouds are moving across a landscape. It is a much more steady income stream, which is something I definitely needed (and still do). To date, since I started this journey, I’ve photographed around 350 properties, been on CoastLife twice, been a finalist in a GLOBAL photo contest, and met several other local photographers who I have looked up to since my time as a hobbyist. It was on a ride to Smyrna to follow my cousin down from the rest area - he was doing the drive solo for the first time, and my uncle wanted someone to follow him from there. Getting to Bombay Hook is always fun because, while the scenery is similar to what it is here at the beaches, it is good to see different places from time to time. It was all the more worthwhile, though, because I got to photograph a northern bobwhite for the first time! I was headed out of the refuge when I spotted it along the entrance road. With a quick stop and jump from the Jeep, I managed two shots before it darted into the grasses. Aside from that one trip to Bombay Hook, though, it has been a steady dose of the coast for me whenever I have the time (and energy) to get there. In fact, I don’t think I could even tell you the last time I went to the inlet to shoot before January! When I stopped, I was on my way to Ocean View for an appointment to photograph a rental home. It was pretty early in the morning, which made me happy - I was able to get some gorgeous blues, pinks and purples during blue hour. Plus, I can’t forget about the last few stars in the sky. During that morning, I made a few stops - one at the inlet itself, where I grabbed a few shots of the jetty marker on the southside, and then I headed over to a nearby location outside the state park, as I wanted to get a few shots of the bridge with my drone. This challenge was one I first took on in 2019, but last year I tried it again to see how much I’d grown as a photographer. To learn, they have to spread their wings and actively fly. The same can be said of us as humans and things we aspire to do - we have access to a wealth of information and resources (equipment) to accomplish anything. We just need to figure out how to make those resources work for us, and the best way to do that is to just take the challenge head-on and jump into it. Spread your wings and fly. I’ve said to myself on more than one occassion that going full-time into photography has been like trial by fire. I had a general idea of business and what I wanted mine to look like, but until I got started I never truly had anything figured out. And even still, I am always learning new things to improve my business and myself as a person along the way. Despite being two of the most photographed subjects in the area, I still love going and taking photos of them. No matter how many photos of them I have, I always take more, trying to capture them from unique angles and perspectives. It also helps to get out and check out the Point in different conditions if you’re a photographer like me, as that allows you a chance to capture the lighthouses in a variety of conditions. Recently, I’ve been trying to get out on days when it is a little cloudier so I can create darker, moody scenes with the lighthouses, which tend to be different than the sunrise and sunset images that are most commonly shared. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/be659878-8486-4f9d-83fe-74bb59205343/IMG_8048.jpg The Adventure Blog - Exploring Cape Henlopen - If you do decide to make the trek around Cape Henlopen, you’ll want to keep an eye out for some amazing coastal wildlife during your walk. The point is a great place to spot all sorts of shorebirds, birds of prey, and other coastal wildlife. During the winter, you may even get lucky and find a seal resting on the beach or peeking its head out of the water. The peninsula is home to a huge array of birds, as it serves as a key migratory and nesting site for different species - this means some birds come for the summer and leave for the winter, and vice versa, like ospreys and piping plovers or even the occasional snowy owl (I would have loved to include one of these, but alas it wasn’t meant to be…). Ultimately, I managed to photograph 127 unique species of birds as part of this project! This doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of all the birds that call Delmarva home, but I am still very proud of this. Not only did I learn a lot about the different resident species, but I also got to explore new places like Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, Maryland and James Farm Ecological Preserve in Ocean View, Delaware as I sought new entries. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/db323653-e61a-4d19-b879-175a96306deb/IMG_7175.jpg The Adventure Blog - In Review - The Year 2023 - 2023 was also the first time I experienced the Outer Banks. Back in April, I spent a weekend there with my friend Kevin Lynam, another local photographer from here at the Delaware Beaches. For nature photography, it meant getting some print, book, and calendar sales, but also finding other opportunities - for example, I landed my first collaboration with Backyards of the Sea, owned by Mark Baratto out of Key West. In this partnership, Mark creates derivative works from my photos in his unique style, and sells them as canvas prints. They are really cool pieces, and I hope to someday make the trip to Key West and meet him in person at his gallery there. Ultimately, my favorite photo from the year is this one of an osprey taken in September when the Point reopened again. Choosing this photo was no easy task, as there were so many directions it could have gone. In the end, I think the deciding factor was ultimately the tones and colors. The grasses in the background are a wonderful, soft green, and the sand is very light from the morning sun. They provide a really nice contrast to the dark browns of the osprey, especially with the shaded side of the bird being the one captured from this angle on the beach. https://www.tylersmileyphotography.com/adventure-blog/exploring-thompson-island-trail monthly 0.5 2025-08-14 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/f802b48d-aba3-44d0-b90b-c8cc0b882a8e/IMG_7386+-+Copy-Edit.jpg The Adventure Blog - Exploring the Thompson Island Nature Preserve - The Thompson Island Trail sits off the Forgotten Mile in Dewey Beach, behind the Spring Lake community. You don’t park in the community to access it though - their roads are private. Instead, you take Bay Road and follow that to the trailhead. Admittedly, it felt a little strange finding the trailhead. It is in a small residential area behind the El Azteca restaurant, and one home even has a homemade sign up pointing to the trail parking. The parking area is very small - I’d say just large enough for four or five vehicles to ensure space to pull out and leave. But, that is what makes this trail such a hidden gem and quickly one of my favorites. It is close to people and places, but at the same time, quiet. Once you find the parking, you can find the trail head just off the parking lot, running along the backside of the Spring Lake community. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/9caf18d1-cdc7-4212-85e9-d66d086585ab/IMG_7323-Edit.jpg The Adventure Blog - Exploring the Thompson Island Nature Preserve - It was at this point where I had an amazing encounter with a gorgeous red fox during my walk along the trail. When I first came upon it, the fox was sitting in the middle of the bridge - the sun had just come up over some trees and it was sunning itself in a nice bright patch. I did spot a red-bellied woodpecker (left) working its way along some trees near the observation deck, and also captured a great blue heron flying over the marsh area when I was headed back to the Jeep. It had its fair share of fun and adventures around the Delmarva Peninsula, so let’s take a second to look back at them together! The month started with some amazing sunrises at Cape Henlopen State Park and Delaware Seashore State Park. Being so close to these beautiful places, I am incredibly fortunate to be able to experience sunrises like the ones from early November almost whenever I want. Plus, Fisher is becoming more of a beach dog, so he enjoys tagging along too. As the month wore on, there was even a trip to Assateague Island this month. This trip was unlike any other, as some bald eagles treated me to a special appearance on the OSV! I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to see that! If not for three new entries captured on Monday the 27th, there would have been no new birds added to the list last month. It worked out that I had more free time between some real estate shoots than I originally planned, so I used that to my advantage to get in a walk along the Gordon’s Pond Trail. I hadn’t intended to make that my first book - that was originally going to be the final part of the Birds of Delmarva Project - but when looking back at the photos I’d done, decided I’d use that as an opportunity to practice creating a book. There were some amazing sunrises, as I’ve touched on already in this post, but my favorite has to be this one to the right, taken around noon on the path to the oceanside of Cape Henlopen. Beach paths and dune crossings are one of my favorite things to photograph, no matter the time of day. Sunrises are typically a great time to do so, because the light isn’t as harsh and the color adds alot of dimension to the image. That said, this one came out exactly as I hoped in the moment, which isn’t something I typically think about in the moment when taking a photo. My goal with this shot was to create something that felt light, airy, and welcoming - almost dreamy. Now, each day is different and brings with it a sense of excitement about what may happen next. This sort of predictable unpredictability is something I hadn’t felt before, but is now something I would never want to give up. Being a photographer full-time may seem like an easy career, but I can assure you from my experiences over the last year that it is anything but easy. I had been dabbling in photography as a passion/side hustle for several years before going full-time. I’d seen steady improvement in my work and with it, the number of followers I had online grew as well. It is not as simple as saying, “Hey, buy my prints!” or “Here’s this service I offer. You should hire me.”. If it were that simple, everyone would do it. One by one I gained new clients on the real estate photography side of my business, and I also steadily grew my audience for the nature photography side (when I started out full-time on Facebook I was around 900 or so I believe, and now, am just over 2,000). Like I said, the predictable unpredictability of each and every day in the life of an entrepreneur and photographer is incredibly exciting and unlike anything I’ve ever really experienced. Already I’m looking forward to 2024 and making plans for new types of content and how I can do even more for all of you - after all, there’s more to being in the photography business than just snapping photos! Of course, there is the Birds of Delmarva book slated for a first-quarter release, and there will be an annual calendar drop at some point as well. But that is only the beginning. I’m going to be starting a vlog soon on my YouTube channel with lessons I’ve learned since taking photography full-time. Despite being an early riser (up around 5:00 am Monday - Friday), the summer sunrises are too early even for me. Now that they are around 6:30/7:00 am, it is a lot easier to make it to the coast to watch the sun come up. It isn’t an everyday occurrence, though, as much as I wish it could be. As I come up on my one-year anniversary of being a full-time photographer, I’m hoping I can use the experience of the last year to really establish some systems that allow me to spend more mornings on the beach. The list will hopefully continue to grow as new migratory species come back to the peninsula for winter. While birds were scarce, October did see me finally get my shot of the old boat at Slaughter Beach (right). This is something I’ve been wanting to shoot for a long time, and I finally got my chance in October. Both are some of my favorites from this year, that the choice could have gone either way. In the end, the screech owl won out because after many visits to its burrow, I finally got a shot with its eyes open. Between the Point at Cape Henlopen reopening to a few trips to Assateague, it really had a little bit of everything! With the Point reopening, I’m looking forward to some hikes around there photographing the lighthouses and seeing what wildlife stops by to visit. That band has some of my favorite horses from the island, so I am always glad to see them. That encounter also allowed me to photograph the cattle egret for the Birds of Delmarva project, which has a total count of 119 birds captured so far! I’m slowly starting to prepare myself for putting the book together that I have planned as the culmination of that project, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates on that! The end of the month got to be a little hectic with real estate shoots, so I wasn’t able to get out and shoot as much as I would have liked, but that’s just something I have to work with as a full-time creative, and am learning to manage as the year goes on. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5feb79dc540279544332b52e/2b455472-e05b-4b7c-9527-e9d579890383/IMG_1261-Edit-2.jpg The Adventure Blog - In Review - September 2023 - Now we get to take a look at my favorite photo of the month of September, which is this black and white reflection of a little blue heron to the left! I snapped this from the Life of the Marsh Trail at Assateague Island, with the bird sitting out in a marsh pool one morning. The stillness of the water and bird allowed me to capture a stunning reflection image, which really lent itself to a clean and simple edit. To achieve this look and feel, I started with the image in color and focused on editing out any pieces of mud flat that were protruding from the water to break it up - this helped give it the minimalist feel that I was looking for, and focus on the bird. Once I had that done, I went through all my normal edits, but decided at the last second to see what it looked like in black and white. It was amazing! I took the Jeep down the OSV in search of Dewey and Coco - even though I didn’t see those two, I did find Sapphire and Foxy’s Gift at the State Line. What a treat that was! It was the first time I’d seen those two, and you could tell they don’t see humans very often. They were very aware of what was going on, and kept a close eye on all my movements. It wasn’t the exciting finish I had hoped for, but the 100th bird wound up being a black vulture (see image to right). It was perched atop a house in Pot Nets, and photographed one day when we were headed out on the boat to fish. But just because I hit 100 unique bird species photographed this year, doesn’t mean the project is over and done with. After sharing the black vulture on social media, you may remember that I shared I’m going to continue searching out new species of birds and will be working on a book with all the photos taken this year! The book will contain as many species as I can track down, and my hope is that is a very comprehensive guide to the various species of birds on the Delmarva Peninsula. It was in July that three of four zines for the project were officially released as well. The support this calendar has received on launch was absolutely mindblowing. To date, about 1/3 of the calendars have sold, with 15% of the profits on each one being donated to the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays - this means the calendars have already raised about $100 for the Center! Speaking of the inland bays, my family was finally able to spend some time out on our boat after getting somethings repaired. This meant an opportunity to create some really unique images, like the one to the right of a croaker my mom hooked during a fishing trip. Trying to create unique images like this one is always a fun little challenge, because you never know what the fish will do when it comes up to the surface. At first, June didn’t seem like it would be that productive of a month for the project - through the 15th of the month, there were only five new entries into the list. This park isn’t very large, or at least it didn’t seem like it from what I saw during my brief time there. It has a few trails through some open space and others that go through a wooded area similar to what you might find if you walk through parts of Cape Henlopen State Park. If you’re ever nearby, I definitely recommend looking it up and checking it out! Other than that, the month was pretty slow and I spent some time relaxing. After the amount of real estate shoots I had in April and May, the rest and relaxation was a welcome change of pace. Compared to April, which only had one new addition, May saw an incredible 19 new birds photographed and added to the list. A real estate job to create a floor plan for a client took me to Smyrna, and I decided a ride through Bombay Hook would allow me to make the most of the day - and boy was that the case, as it was definitely the highlight of the day. Admittedly, I was hoping to spot a northern harrier I had seen the last time I was through the refuge, but wasn’t that lucky. I did, though, have my first encounter with some black-necked stilts which was super exciting! It is very easy to see how they got their name if you ever have a chance to see them in person. For April, that meant a venture off the Delmarva Peninsula to the Outer Banks - my first trip to that area! If I had my way, I can honestly say that I would have stayed if possible. Being about 4.5 hours from us here at the Delaware Beaches, it was an easy drive all things considered. We stayed in Kill Devil Hills at a really nice AirBnB (check it out here) that I would definitely look into for future trips to the OBX. Most of the trip was spent in and around that area, photographing near the Avalon Fishing Pier and Bodie Island Lighthouse (as seen in the photo above). We also made trips down to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (right) and to the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge where we saw some otters, birds, and even got a black bear sighting Sunday morning before we headed back toward Delmarva. When my friend Kevin Lynam and I took his boat out to explore Assateague Island from the Sinepuxent Bay side, it was one of the cold and windy days. First was a trip to Blackwater Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, Maryland. Kevin invited me along one day, and we adventured around the wildlife refuge - both along Wildlife Drive in the refuge itself, and on some nearby roads that cover the outside of it. When I say there were birds galore, I mean there were so many different types of birds around - herons, eagles, woodpeckers, ducks - you name it, and you could have probably seen it there. We wrapped up the trip in Cambridge proper, checking out some ducks at Oakley Street and the Choptank Lighthouse (which is very cool looking, by the way). The other first, as mentioned previously, was a trip over to Washington, DC for the peak blook of the Cherry Blossoms. I made the day trip over one Thursday, and was not just blown away by the blossoms, but admittedly also the number of people. It was one of the hardest experiences I’ve had thus far as far as finding compositions. Between weaving in and around walkers, couples at portrait sessions, and other photographers trying to get shots like me, it was an incredible challenge. Not only that, but I went on a cloudy day, so the sky was pretty boring. February also saw another adventure with my friend Kevin Lynam up the Broadkill River, where we surprisingly saw an injured seal pup (here’s a link to his post about it - I highly encourage you to check it out). That boating trip also included some herons, eagles, as well as some other types of birds. And how could I forget the day I spent in Cape May completing some photography work for the Cape May County Zoo! That was such a fun day, and is a trip I highly recommend anyone make if they’re looking for something different to do during a stay at the Delaware Beaches. Not only do I feel I have become a better photographer since 2019, but my equipment has changed as well. Back then, I was shooting on my Canon EOS Rebel T6 (great introductory DSLR camera, but more on that another time), and a kit 100 - 200 mm lens. The lens worked well, but it had limitations as I couldn’t zoom in tight on subjects further away - that was, to me, the biggest issue. Today, I shoot on a Canon EOS 90D and have a Sigma 150 - 600 mm telephoto lens - this lens now allows me to zoom super close to subjects that aren’t as close, and get a super crisp, sharp image. Another aspect I am changing with this project is opening up the range to cover not just Delaware, but all of the Delmarva Peninsula. For October, my choice for personal favorite is this shot of a Northern Flicker I snapped in Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. This Flicker lives near one of the many trails in the refuge, and I see it on every time I make the trip up to Prime Hook. The day I snapped this photo, it flew over me as I walked on the trail and landed on the tree it is perched on in this photo. In particular this photo stuck out to me because of how the lighting played in the image. The contrast between the darker, primarily shadowed foreground and the brightly lit background is a really pleasing scene. One morning I ventured out to the Gordon’s Pond Trail when I stopped at one of the overlooks on the raised boardwalk section of the trail. As I was turning to keep walking the trail, I saw a huge bird on a tree in the distance. Upon zooming in, I saw it was a bald eagle. Naturally, I kept taking photos as I walked along the trail to get as many as I could from as many angles as I could. In the end, the eagle was perched on a tree that I could have reached out and touched from the trail - not so far in the distance after all! Take this photo to the left as an example - it looks like I was in the water and pointing the lens right at the gull, but I was actually laying flat on the pontoon deck and aiming down along the water line. This really helps give a sense of where we were, and what the spot was like. During a trip out to the Peninsula for my full-time job, I was fortunate enough to explore their community nature trail, which is just a little boardwalk area that loops around a small section of marsh. There, I snapped a few shots of some birds out enjoying the marshlands like egrets and geese. It’s also where I took the photo to the left of a mourning dove. This dove was sitting just off the boardwalk, completely out of sight. If I hadn’t accidentally scared it, then I never would have seen it. Thankfully, it didn’t fly too far off and I was able to zoom in really tight with my 150 - 600 mm lens to get this shot. It came out even better than I thought it would in the moment, really putting into perspective how amazing that particular lens is. The lens I borrowed from my brother is a Canon 60mm Macro lens. The differences, at least in my opinion, pick up there. The South side’s jetty extends further away from the coast, and is marked by a tall marker. This marker is featured in some of my favorite shots, including this one to the left that I took on one of these recent rides to Indian River. The North side’s jetty isn’t as long, but the currents and shorebreak make that side ideal for surfing. This reserve is part of Cape Henlopen State Park, and features a drive-on beach access. I also saw and explored part of a small trail that ran along the Broadkill River, a brackish river that runs from Roosevelt Inlet in Lewes to Milton. Being on the Delaware Bay, you can also spend a day at the beach as you would in Lewes or Rehoboth, just without the crowds like I mentioned before. This, to me, means paddle boarding or kayaking, swimming, and just relaxing in general. In the short amount of time I spent at Broadkill Beach working on this project, I decided I enjoyed it a lot. Though I wasn’t there long, I definitely encourage you to check this hidden gem out. When pulled off well, a composite image can look so amazing and stunning, and will fool the most discerning of eyes. Okay, so what is a composite image then? It is any photo or image that combines elements from two or more separate, original files. It took me three or four YouTube videos until I finally found one that explained it in a way I could understand and follow along (check it out here). My personal opinion is that the purpose is to add interest to an image that would otherwise be lacking it. For example, if you look at this composite to the left from my trip to Florida, I added the sky in the background to this image. Prior to that change the sky was a clear blue block at the top of the image. Did I like it that way? Of course, that’s why I took it. But does having the clouds in the sky add some depth and something interesting? There was no social distancing - from a business stand point, probably to recoup the losses they incurred at the start of the pandemic - but at the same time, it didn’t really bother me. I didn’t know what to expect, so to have someone right next to me three of the flights was weird, but not unexpected. I will say I did NOT double mask, but you ARE required to have a mask on at all times in the air port and on your flight. November 2022 was when I first took photography full-time. Before then, I had been playing with a camera as a hobby/side hustle for about five years. I wasn’t worried about generating lots of money from my photography, as I had traditional jobs at the time. Photography was mostly just a way to spend my free time and relax before or after going to work. One of the jobs I had was in marketing for a small local distillery, which I used to get some experience in food and beverage photography (though, admittedly, I wasn’t very good at it). I parlayed this, as well as the bartending experience I picked up as the job evolved, into creating a mixology blog. She and I worked pretty closely over the three plus years I was there, so I felt she deserved to know what was going on. During that conversation, she asked if I knew what I was going to do when it was all said and done, to which I replied I hadn’t thought about it much but would figure it out. She was the one who recommended I take photography full-time, and consider doing real estate listing photography, as I could make as much or as little as I wanted with it. There is certainly potential to do so. What I’m saying is that I don’t think it is a consistent enough income to sustain yourself. Of my income from 2023, 90 to 95% of it was generated from real estate photography. The rest was from odd jobs like dogsitting for a family friend and print sales. The print sales mostly occurred during the holiday season, so despite the efforts I put into selling prints last year, I didn’t see any results until the year was almost over. Down the road, my feelings may change on this, but I can’t comment on it outside the experiences I’ve had to date. There are some new strategies I’m trying out this year to boost my income from print sales, which I’ll comment on later after I’ve had time to play with them.
